World soccer's governing body will investigate the racial taunting of England's black players by Spanish soccer fans during two international matches this week. FIFA said it would demand an explanation from the Spanish soccer association for the monkey chants and other racial abuse.
"There is no room whatsoever for racism or discrimination in our sport," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said.
Ashley Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips were subjected to abuse from Spanish fans during England's 1-0 loss to Spain in Wednesday night's friendly at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid.
Other England players, including Carlton Cole of Aston Villa were subjected to similar chants in an under-21 match in Spain Tuesday.
"FIFA will be investigating the circumstances of the two friendly matches between Spain and England," the governing body said in a statement. "It will demand explanation from the Spanish football association so that it can examine the incidents."
FIFA also expressed concern at two other recent incidents. Some Arsenal players were subjected to racial taunts at a Champions' League match against Greece's Panathinaikos, and fans attacked French side Bastia's black players after a domestic league match against St. Etienne.
